But we’re getting ahead of ourselves now. We want to tell you exactly how this system came to be.

My first website didn’t work for me

You see, I (Veronica) started my coaching business in 1998. Back then, there wasn’t as much choice as there is today – you either built a website using html or html. That was it. When I decided that I wanted a website, I started to learn some of the basics, but to make the best use of my time, I felt it would be better to get someone else to do my website for me. What a mistake that was. I found myself emailing him to get changes made, only to find that he was busy with other business, and small little changes would sometimes take days before it was finally made. I didn’t feel very much in control at all. It wasn’t very long before I started to resent having to wait and then getting billed for it at the end of the month. What’s more, the bill was always more than I thought it should be!

So I took to building and maintaining my own websites. I learned a fair deal and was pretty OK at it, until Jeff took a look at my coding. Well, it did its job but, okay, let’s admit it, I was never born to be a programmer. So Jeff took over being webmaster (thankfully, though secretly…don’t tell him I told you that he’s infinitely better than I can ever hope to be as a webmaster! Just kidding, he does know and doesn’t actually need for me to tell him that. And that’s why he builds the websites and I focus on helping with content.)

Anyway, it was then that I realised the value of being able to update my own website “in-house”. When I sent out a newsletter to my list, it would be updated to my website within minutes.

But having resolved that challenge, I soon discovered that that wasn’t the only problem. People looked at my website and always gave me positive feedback about how good it looked. The thing was, it wasn’t very good at bringing me clients. Sure, there was the odd one or two, and it was great because the media was able to find me (this is one of the 7 ways in which your website can bring you more money that we list in our Special Report) and it gave me some credibility (another of the 7 reasons), but I wanted more business. I mean, wouldn’t you?

I Wanted my Website to Bring Me Business

So I studied the ins and outs of internet marketing and it didn’t take long to realise that I had made the cardinal mistake of building a website that was good to look at and nothing more. People were coming to my website, having a quick flick, and then leaving. That was it. I had to find out what would make the difference.

And thankfully I did.

The design of the website had to be visually appealing but not necessarily fancy. What is crucial is that it does not distract the visitor from reading what you have to offer. And that was the other piece of the jigsaw.

The content of my website wasn’t compelling reading to anyone else other than, maybe, me. It was about me, what I did, my qualifications, yes, what I felt I could to help potential clients, but it really didn’t do very much to engage my readers and my potential clients. I had to learn how to write in a completely new way and I had to learn a specific format in which to structure that content.
